In Reflection: 2015 Goal Highlights

It’s that time of year again. That’s right: the end of it! But also, the time where I go back to the beginning of the year and evaluate how my annual goal setting turned out throughout it. (I’ve done this before. See: 2013, 2014.)

Allison and I changed it up in 2015 by meeting quarterly to check-in on our goals. I found this beneficial to not only remain on track, but also to reset goals that had already been achieved, or that had become passé.

As always, some were accomplished and some were not, but here’s a round up of (mostly) what worked.

CAREER:

I get hired full-time with benefits.

After a year of contract work, I was ready for a shift in gears. Through a somewhat unbelievable turn of events, I managed to meet this goal in the first quarter of the year. Allowing me to add on a new goal:

I study for and pass the Claritas Investment Certificate exam.

And I did it!

claritas investment certificate

I research three programs in editing.

I didn’t research three, but I did enroll in one! I’ll be working toward the UC Berkeley Extension Professional Sequence in Editing class come February.

HEALTH:

I go on three hikes.

Surpassed this goal by one: a hike up Mount Diablo on MLK Jr. Day, Cataract Falls Trail in Mount Tam on Good Friday, around the Cache Creek area over Memorial Day, and up Bishop Peak in San Luis Obispo in August.

I run three miles three times per week.

This goal morphed over the course of the year. I kept it for the first quarter, then moved it into the Global Corporate Challenge through work, and then more or less slacked off. Whoops. I did complete two trail runs, though: Dirty Secret Trail Run in May with Lindsey and Mt. Tam Trail Run in November with Timothy.

I am conscious of my posture and check in with myself about it at least 3 times per day.

This goal failure brought to you by the computer hunch.

PERSONAL:

I streamline my wardrobe by getting rid of clothing and making conscious purchases.

Inspired by the idea of a capsule wardrobe (though I’m not ready for quite that extreme), I’ve made a big dent in my overstuffed closet, unloading piles of clothes to Goodwill. At the same time, I’ve moved toward a more simplified black/white wardrobe, making outfit compiling (not to mention packing!) so much simpler. And to the lady at Freestyle affectionately referring to me as “stripey,” due to my penchant for purchasing black & white striped clothing.

“Stripes match stripes” is my new fashion mantra.

Get the Bourbon Babes Instagram over 10,000 followers.

We entered January 2015 with just over 1,000 followers, so I was pretty happy when we passed the 10K mark early in November! And we closed the year at 11.8K and counting.

I read at least 18 books.

Surpassed this by 8, in large part thanks to getting back into graphic novels again, which make for speedy reads. Here’s the rundown:

CONTINUING GOALS:

I maintain my monthly get togethers with girlfriends.

Book Club

book club ladies

and Bourbon Babes.

Going strong!

Give zero fucks.

Despite some unfortunate bumps along the way, such as getting mugged, I managed to maintain this to the degree it should be maintained.

—————–

2016’s goals aren’t set yet, but believe me — they will be.

2014 in costume

last year i recapped my month of october in costume, but this time i’m going for the entire year. have i mentioned how rad it is to have friends who embrace the opportunity for a costume party at any given moment?

i don’t have any planned costume extravaganzas coming up through december (though you never know), so therefore this should serve as a comprehensive 2014 costume recap. just received an invite to a cowboy christmas/oregon trail themed holiday party, so i spoke too soon. will have to update for december costumes afterall!

1. SANDWICH

my costumed year began in march, when haley & colleen had a food-themed costume party for their birthday. i got to bring my sandwich costume out of the rafters of my parents garage and onto the…plate? doubled up on the meat this time with a bonus haley.

2. SUZY BISHOP

went to a wes anderson-themed party at golden bear, where two forms of suzy bishop from moonrise kingdom hung out with agatha from grand budapest hotel.

3. JAMES BOND ARTRAVE

bike party sacramento had a video game themed ride in june, so i grabbed by bubble gun from lady gaga’s artRAVE and went as james bond from 007 goldeneye (did you play that on n64? i liked using the paint ball gun to draw graffiti). i was accompanied by princess peach and a sim.

4. ABSTRACT ART

for my birthday in september, i had an “a” themed letter party, where you can dress up as anything, so long as it starts with the letter “a.” i went as abstract art and, more specifically, a mondrian (given solid blocks of color are about the extent of my painting skills). there were several artists in attendance who claimed to have painted me.

5. PET CLOUD

many moons (hah!) ago, my friend kristin made me a pet cloud. so, when haley and i were stymied about what to be for crocker’s october art mix, and she texted me a picture of her rainbow dress, i knew i had to embody my pet cloud in costume form.

despite a cat’s pre-disposal to run away from all things water, i hung out with a sea creature all night.

7. SLOTH

And, finally, my crowning moment: THE SLOTH.

2014 sloth

i’d thought there was no surpassing my sandwich costume after its original debut in 2006, but the sloth this year might give it a run for its money.

what was your favorite thing to dress up as this year?
